Have you bought a domain name on Namecheap and want to link it to your hosting? Are you changing hosts and wondering how to transfer your domain name from Namecheap? Well, we will see here how to transfer a domain name to its new host.

Transferring a domain name is very easy in two steps. So don’t panic if you have to do this.

Here’s how.

1 - Obtain a transfer code (auth-code)

To obtain your transfer code, also called an authentication code (auth-code), you must request it from your current host (if you change your host) or from your registrar (service which manages domain names).

In the management interface of your hosting, you will find a section linked to the domain name in which you can obtain your auth-code.

If you bought a domain name on a marketplace, generally you will get your auth-code as soon as you have made the payment.

There are a few criteria to be met in order to transfer a domain name:

  • the domain name must have existed for at least 60 days
  • the domain expiration date must be greater than 60 days

If these criteria are not met, the transfer of the domain name will be impossible.

If the domain name to be transferred was created less than 60 days ago, you will have to wait. If your domain name expires, you will have to renew it first.

2 - Transfer the domain name

Nothing could be simpler to transfer.

Your host provides you with a dedicated page. Once you’re signed in, just enter the domain name you’d like to transfer.

The auth-code received in step 1 will then be asked to confirm the transfer. Once completed, all you have to do is confirm to have this domain name with your host.

Obviously, if you are transferring an already existing website, you will also need to import the files and the database, then modify the information in the wp-config.php file.

3 - How long does a domain transfer take?

Usually, it takes around 5-7 days, but in some rare cases it can take up to a maximum of 14 days.

But the time factor mostly depends on the new registrar to which you wish to transfer your domain. Some have ways to accelerate the process and some don’t.

That is why it is always considered best practice to initiate the domain transfer long before the domain expiration date.
